Regioni d’Italia: Piedmont

The Piedmont region is located in the north-west of Italy. The region's name comes from the Italian phrase meaning "at the foot of the mountains."  The river Po flows through Piedment and the region is bordered by the Southern France (Rhone-Alpes et Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur); the Italian regions of Val D'Aosta, Lombardy, Liguria and Emilia Romagna; and the Swiss Cantos of the Valais and Tessin. Piedmont's main city is Turin.

Covering 25,400 km² and constituting 8.4 % of Italy’s entire surface area, Piedmont is the second biggest region in Italy.
Piedmont has 4.3 million inhabitants, making it the fifth most populous region in Italy. The region is also the second most important industrial centre, after the Lombardy region. Piedmont can be considered the “door” to the Alps and Turin is surrounded by a large rice region to the east.
On one side of the region visitors can find the Barolo vineyards, which are the pearl of Italy’s wineries, as well as the rare white truffle, which thrives due to the region’s brilliant sunshine. On the other side of Piedmont, visitors can find two of the most spectacular mountains in the Alps – the White Mountain and the Cervino.

Piedmont, things to do

Piedmont is a region rich in history and natural beauty.
Visitors to Piedmont have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history of the city of Turin and to explore the National Park of Gran Paradiso. Major Lake with its Borromee islands, where prestigious Italian gardens and the opulent Borromeo’s family palaces are situated, is another of Piedmont's most beautiful spots.
The region offers a variety of cultural events, sport activities and, of course, a luscious cuisine. The main tourist attractions are Sestiere, a ski site for winter sports; Bardonecchia, in which visitors can take to take beautiful walks in the valley and the Zegna’s Oasis, an area of wild and uncontaminated nature, far from the main tourist areas.

Getting there

Turin is connected to the main points of Italy and Europe with a comprehensive transport network of trains, airports and motorways. The Turin-Caselle airport is 16 km from the centre of the city. With good road and motorway networks, Turin is easily accessible by car. Travelling in Italy by train is comfortable and cheap. The majority of trains end in Turin Porta Nuova, which is the city’s main rail station, located in the town centre.
