Campania is a southern region of Italy that borders Lazio, Molise, Puglia and Basilicata. The Tirreno sea is to the west and Naples is the region's main city. With its 6 million inhabitants (t432 inhabitants per square kilometer ), Campania is the most populous region in Italy.
The Campania region is composed of mountains (35%), hills (50%) and plains. The Tirrenian coast includes four gulfs, the most well known being the Gulf of Naples, with the nearby islands of Ischia and Capri.
The region is dominated by Vesuvius, the famous volcano that covered Ercolano and Pompei in 79 AD and remains active and potentially dangerous.

Campania has copious architectural treasures and historical places (Pompei, Ercolano, Paestum), as well as extraordinary natural riches (Capri, Ischia, and Procida), the Amalfi coast (Amalfi and Positano) and Vesuvius.
Naples, also known as “the capital of the south”, is an authentic jewel of Italy situated on one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It offers an architectural legacy of more than a thousand years, an exceptional archaeological museum, and numerous baroque churches. Warm, volcanic, and effervescent, Naples is the city of the sun, the capital of pizza and Italian folklore. For some, Naples is the most beautiful city of the world. Others refuse to appreciate it. But one thing is certain, its atmosphere will not leave visitors indifferent.
Campania is accesible by several routes:
- By air: visitors to Campania can either arrive at the Capodichino airport, 7kms outside of Naples, or the Fiumicino or Ciampino in Rome. From Rome, visitors can take the Rome-Naples train. Trains depart every hour; the trip takes about two and a half hours. Flights from Paris to Naples are offered daily by Alitalia and Air France.
- By train: Naples and the other main cities of Campania are served by the national rail service. Visitors traveling to Campania can reach Naples from Milan (6 1/2 hours), Bologna (5 hours), Florence (4 hours) and Venice (7 hours). There are three main train stations in Naples: the central station, Napoli Mergellina and Napoli Campi Flegrei.
- By car: driving from Paris to Naples takes two days. Italy enjoys an excellent network of highways and therefore visitors can reach Naples and any other main town in the Campania region without difficulty.
