Friuli Venezia Giulia is located in the north-east of Italy. The region is surrounded by Slovenia in the east, Austria in the north, Veneto in the west and the Adriatic Sea to the south. The region enjoys an autonomous status in Italy; the region's main city is Trieste.
Friuli Venezia Giulia's population is 1.2 million (density 151.9 inhabitants per square kilometer), and four linguistic groups divide the region—Italian (53.53%), Friulano (43%), Slovenian (4.7%) and German (0.4%).
Mountains cover about 42.2% of the territory, the plains cover about 38.1% and the hills encompass the remaining 19.3%.
Numerous waterways, including the Livenza, the Timavo, the Isonzo and the Tagliamento, crisscross Friuli Venezia Giulia.



Friuli Venezia Giulia is a beautiful but serious and austere region. It features numerous attractions and contrasts including the Carnia and Giulie mountains, the hills between central Friuli and Udine and from the Collio vineyards towards Gorizia, steep and sometimes dry landscapes of Isotino and Carso Triestino, plains in the low Friuli, and beaches of fine sand protected by pine forests.
The region boasts a historical heritage and rich culture; each city centre has its own museum and various architectural styles that will surely suprise visitors.
Trieste, the most central-European city of Italy, features an important ancient and modern history and culture. The city has been loved and commemorated such important literary figures as James Joyce, Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba.
Friuli Venezia Giulia is accesible by several routes :
- By train: visitors can arrive at the main station of Trieste or at the main station of Udine.
- By air: Trieste is served by the international airport “Ronchi dei Legionari” (33 km from Trieste and 40km from Udine). Airlines such as Thomas Cook and Myair offer many convenient flight times.
- By car: visitors can utilize the northern Italian autoroutes.
