Regioni d’Italia: Liguria

“Liguria Terradamare”, a slogan that conveys the notion that Liguria offers much more than just seaside holidays! Liguria is both land and sea and filled with villages where time seems to have stopped centuries ago, forests of chestnut trees, and the strong flavours of a cuisine that features local products. In summer, Liguria becomes a natural stage for shows, festivals and concerts under the stars. And in autumn, the various events make for an original holiday destination. All this goes to show that Liguria is a region filled with excitement and is truly a terradamare… a land to love!

Liguria can be divided into five large areas— Riviera dei Fiori, Riviera delle Palme, Genoa, the Tigullio and the genovesato, the Cinqueterre area and the Gulf of Poets.

Liguria, things to do

Excitement at Sea. A holiday in Liguria is a sweet, blue rhapsody, a melody of salt, surf and wind. Days can be spent sailing from a hidden inlet to a small, romantic harbour, stopping here and there for a diving expedition among underwater gardens, experiencing a close encounter with the giants of the sea in the “Cetaceans’ Sanctuary”, accompanied by expert biologists, or  sunbathing on one of the many beaches that fly the Blue Flag, guaranteeing clear waters and respect for the environment.
In Liguria anything is possible, even coming face to face with a penguin or shark behind glass at the Acquario di Genova, the biggest and most visited aquarium in Europe, designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano.

Scenes of Art. With all the narrow alleys and precious marble sculptures, princely manors, monuments and castles, it is impossible to count the reasons to discover Liguria's cultural heritage on your next holiday. Liguria: an open-air museum.

Traces of History. Villages perched on mountain crests, offering picture perfect views, where life flows slowly to nature’s rhythm. A stay in a medieval village is like a trip through time and history!
Many of the Ligurian villages have been awarded prestigious merits. 10 Orange Flags fly over the Ligurian territory, where in 1998 Regione Liguria decided to enhance its hinterland in collaboration with the Touring Club. 13 Ligurian villages have been elected among the "most beautiful Italian villages."

Scents and Flavours. Ligurian cuisine is simple and light, a genuine expression of the life of seamen and farmers. Liguria boasts a huge variety of flavours and aromas that range from the fruits of the earth to the catch of the day to the region's freshly baked goods. Every municipality of the region has its specialty and recipes worth discovering by visiting the many cellars, oil mills, restaurants and trattorias which offer anything from “cappon magro”, a refined fish dish, to “panissa” made with chick peas, “cima alla genovese”, a wonderful mix of meat and vegetables, and “trofie” pasta with pesto sauce.

Outdoor Sports. Nature and sport lovers will consider Liguria to be a paradise. Visitors should not forget all the equipment needed to experience an active holiday in an open air gym. Have fun along the many bike paths and dirt paths that wind slowly up the Alps and Apennines, get your adrenalin going on our free climbing cliffs, try for a hole in one in our region’s beautiful golf courses, or sail freely out on the peaceful sea. A workout for body and mind, Liguria feeds your craving for wellness.

A Sea of Gardens. Experience magnificent seaside villas filled with history, historical mansions of unparalleled beauty and green treasures in the many  parks, botanical gardens, greenhouses and rose gardens whose upkeep remains a testimony to the love and care of their ancient owners. A visit to the Ligurian villas and gardens inevitably invites visitors to respect the land and the environment and offers novel holiday ideas!
