Regioni d’Italia: Lombardy

Lombardy is located in northern Italy, bordered on the north by  Switzerland, on the west by Piedmont and on the east by Veneto. Region's main city is Milan.
The region has a population of more than 9,450,000 inhabitants and a population density of 375 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Lombardy is the richest and most developed region in Italy; it is a part of the Padana plain with Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia Romagna.

Lombardy is divided into plain lands (47.1% of the territory) and mountainous areas (40.5%). Hills cover the remaining 12.4% of the region. In the north the tall glistening peaks of the Alps reach a height of 3.966 metres at Pizzo Zupò, the second highest mountain in the Bernina range. At the foot of the range, glacial erosion has cut through the valley and formed five large lakes: Iseo lake, Como lake, Maggiore lake and Lugano lake.
The region is crisscrossed by dozens of rivers (amongst them the river Po) and has many lakes both natural and artificial.

Lombardy, things to do

Lombardy is the richest and most developed region of Italy, but it also offers a great historical, monumental, artistic and natural heritage. Milan, the main city of the region, boasts an interesting artistic and cultural heritage, but at the same time it is a dynamic metropolis buzzing with life. No wonder it is considered the European capital of fashion, luxury and modern art.
In the north of Lombardy you can find the highest peaks of the Alps,  which, during the winter season, attract many tourists. Further South, mountains dominate the region of the great lakes of Como, Garda, Iseo, Maggiore and Lugano.
The Padana plain offers enchanting and inspiring landscapes.
